Home Assistant / Zigbee hardware

Which Zigbee coordinator works with Home Assistant?

The right Zigbee coordinator depends on your integration, adapter firmware and existing network—not just a Zigbee logo.

Direct answer: pick the integration before the USB stick

Choose ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT first, then check the exact coordinator against that project's supported hardware list. ZHA uses Home Assistant's Zigbee integration and the zigpy driver family. Zigbee2MQTT runs its own gateway and needs a supported adapter, coordinator firmware, an MQTT broker and Home Assistant discovery. The same radio chip name does not prove that every firmware and setup combination is supported.

Search documented Zigbee2MQTT device capabilities in Leivro →. This finder does not certify ZHA support or independently test installations.

Zigbee and Thread are not interchangeable radio modes

For example, Home Assistant documents that its Connect ZBT-2 can be dedicated to either Zigbee or Thread, but not both at once. Matter-over-Thread needs a suitable Thread network and border router. It is not made compatible by selecting a Zigbee2MQTT coordinator. Do not infer universal multiprotocol operation from an adapter supporting multiple radio standards in its specifications.

Five checks before buying or replacing a coordinator

  1. Identify the integration you will actually run (ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, or Thread/Matter). Save the existing network's backup and software details before changing adapters.
  2. Find the exact adapter product identifier and chipset in the chosen integration's current supported hardware list.
  3. Read the required coordinator firmware and transport details. Zigbee2MQTT warns that some Wi-Fi-connected adapters may be less reliable than wired Ethernet or locally connected alternatives.
  4. Review network migration and re-pairing requirements. A software change does not automatically migrate an existing mesh.
  5. Check placement, USB interference, available USB ports, update support and the return policy. Never assume range or a precise device count from a chipset name alone.
